The City of Markham remains committed to providing high-quality Animal Services that support the safety, well-being, and humane treatment of animals within our community. Through education, enforcement, and strong partnerships, the City continues to protect both residents and animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
The City responds to a wide range of animal-related concerns, including animal welfare, dog bites, lost and found pets, leash law, and animal licensing.
In partnership with the Ontario SPCA, adoption and sheltering services for domestic animals from Markham are delivered with compassion and professionalism. The Ontario SPCA operates a fully equipped animal centre offering veterinary care, enrichment, and rehabilitation for animals in need, while working to match pets with loving forever homes. They also support broader animal welfare efforts through community outreach, humane education, and spay/neuter programs.
For wildlife in need of care, the City contracts Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge, a licensed rehabilitation centre located in Pefferlaw, Ontario. This dedicated facility provides rescue, treatment, and safe release for injured, orphaned, or displaced wild animals from the Markham area. Shades of Hope plays a vital role in the preservation of Ontario’s native species by providing specialized care in a natural setting, helping to ensure a successful return to the wild.
Together, these partnerships reflect Markham’s holistic, community-first approach to animal services—supporting both domestic and wild animals through care, compassion, and responsibility.
