Stay Safe Around Stormwater Ponds
Stormwater ponds are built to manage rainwater runoff from new developments and help prevent flooding or water quality issues for downstream areas. Although these ponds often look like and are commonly surrounded by parks and walking paths, they are engineered systems. Water levels can rise or fall quickly, and there may be deep sections, fast-moving water near inlets and outlets, or thin ice in winter—all of which can pose safety risks. The public is advised to stay cautious and avoid entering these ponds.
These ponds also play an important role in protecting the environment. They capture pollutants like sediment, oil, and debris before the water flows into rivers and streams. During hot and dry weather, algae growth is common. While it may look unpleasant, it’s a normal part of how stormwater ponds function.
