Expert Tree Planting Support Returns for Markham Residents This Fall
MARKHAM, ON – August 6, 2025 – For the seventh consecutive year, Markham residents can receive expert assistance planting native trees at a reduced cost, thanks to a continued partnership between the City of Markham, the Regional Municipality of York, and Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF).
With fall approaching, now is the perfect time to plant. Through the LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program, eligible property owners can choose from over 30 native tree species and receive personalized planting advice from a certified arborist, all for just $100 per deciduous tree or $50 per evergreen tree (select species only). The program is available to residential, multi-unit, and commercial properties, with a limit of five trees per property per year, space permitting.
“This initiative is a big part of our Trees for Tomorrow commitment—it really helps us build a healthier, greener Markham,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Every tree we plant makes a difference. It strengthens our urban forest; improves the air we breathe and supports local wildlife. This program hopefully inspires residents to take action at home to help create a more sustainable future for our city.”
The LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program empowers residents to make informed planting decisions that support the city’s environmental goals.
“Planting native trees is one of the most effective ways to improve our urban environment,” says Janet McKay, Executive Director of LEAF. “From cooling our neighbourhoods to enhancing local biodiversity, the benefits are far-reaching. We’re proud to continue working with the City of Markham to make tree planting more accessible so more residents can contribute to growing a healthier, greener community.”
Each participant receives an in-person consultation with a LEAF arborist, who assesses yard conditions, such as sunlight, soil quality, and available space, and recommends species best suited to the site. Full-service planting is available, with LEAF staff returning to complete the planting. A do-it-yourself option is also offered for those who prefer to plant on their own. Detailed care instructions are provided to help ensure long-term tree health and success.
Residents who have participated in the program are quick to praise the experience:
“The staff at LEAF are courteous, professional, and knowledgeable. They provided us with their expertise and guided us toward choosing the best trees for our needs. It feels good to take part in a program that supports sustainability, biodiversity, and care for the environment. We won’t hesitate to use LEAF again in the future!”
— Puneet, City of Markham resident
“Great experience buying a tree through LEAF. From the consultation to the tree planting and the educational resources provided. I'm definitely recommending LEAF to my family and friends.”
